BUILDING CONNECTIONS FOR QTBIPOC youth

Our Youth Network Project is an Ontario-based project for QTBIPOC students. As part of our Intersectionality and Diversity Program, the Youth Network Project focuses on supporting queer and trans students through activities such as outreach to and networking with gay-straight alliances (GSAs), educational workshops and queer and trans Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (QTBIPOC) specific resourcing.

We offer a roster of workshops built for QTBIPOC youth in grades 6 to 12 that give a chance for students and educators to learn more about how our unique identities impact our lives and the world around us. These workshops provide a dynamic, interactive space for youth to gain deeper empathy and compassion for their peers and community members, through engaging activities such as art, poetry, writing, and other mediums.

Grounding Our Roots National QTBIPOC Youth Conference May 10 to 13 2024 Ottawa, On

Grounding Our Roots is a multi-day in-person conference in Ottawa (held from May 10 to 13, 2024) gathering 30 queer and trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (QTBIPOC) youth ages 18-24.

This free 3-day national QTBIPOC conference brings to Ottawa, ON youth who are advocates, community organizers, and leaders from across Canada. Through workshops, powerful speakers, and breakout sessions QTBIPOC youth will expand their skill set for and understanding of activism.

YNP: Black 2SLGBTQIA youth connect a partnership between CCGSD and UltraViolet Kingston

Black 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth Connect is a partnership between CCGSD’s Youth Network Project that works with QTBIPOC youth in Ontario and Kingston-based Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth-focused group UltraViolet Kingston.

By giving funding to UltraViolet Kingston to support their project of monthly community gatherings that centre wellness for Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 15-25, CCGSD aims to support QTBIPOC-led groups in the work they do supporting their communities locally.

Recognizing that many Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth experience isolation and marginalization in communities with smaller Black populations and a lack of intentional programming for Black queer and trans youth in these cities, the project aims to create programming for Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to learn, build connections with their peers and Black 2SLGBTQIA+ elders and knowledge holders, and reflect meaningfully on their experiences and resources available to them.

Through a series of monthly community gatherings hosted by UltraViolet Kingston for Black 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, and virtual workshops open to QTBIPOC youth across Canada, hosted by the Youth Network Project, the Black 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth Connect project aims to create the space for Black (and POC) queer and trans youth to connect and build community with others who have similar experiences.
