Press release: telus friendly future foundation donates $20,000 to ccgsd.

December 13, 2022

Funding will assist in building connections that will mitigate feelings of loneliness and isolation in 2SLGBTQ+ youth brought on by the pandemic, directly serving 1000-1500 students in Ontario.

Ottawa, Ontario, December 13, 2022 – TELUS Friendly Future Foundation® has donated $20,000 to contribute towards CCGSD’s effort in supporting the Youth Network Project which provides activities to queer and trans students through outreach and networking with gay-straight alliances (GSAs), educational workshops and queer and trans-Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (QTBIPOC) specific resourcing.

Ahmed Abdallah, CCGSD’s Youth Network Project Manager, says TELUS’ assistance will “enhance learning opportunities and increase access to resources that will build resilience, confidence and strength amongst 2SLGBTQ+ BIPOC youth.”

This amount will contribute to expanding the number of workshops available, which will allow CCGSD to achieve greater reach and improved resource delivery.

“We’ve heard from our charity partners about the challenges 2SLGBTQ+ BIPOC youth in their community are facing,” says Shanan Spencer-Brown, Executive Director of TELUS Friendly Future Foundation.“We are honoured to be able to support CCGSD, with a donation of $20,000 from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation® Ottawa Community Board. We are so appreciative of the work CCGSD is doing in their community, supporting:

  • the increased engagement with school communities in Ontario through outreach strategies,
  • the increase of greater self-awareness and resilience of marginalized 2SLGBTQ+ youth about their own identity to improve self-esteem.
  • the increase of youth intersectional understanding about 2SLGBTQ+ issues (e.g., coming out, bullying, addiction and mental health) to decrease the prevalence of homophobic/transphobic bullying and harassment in school communities in Ontario; and
  • the increase in the leadership capacity of 2SLGBTQ+ students to provide peer-to-peer support in school communities through training that foster community connection and reduce isolation
