A message from Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah

“Let’s continue to advocate for a better world for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to thrive.” CCGSD Announces Departure of Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah, Executive Director.

Dear supporters, partners, and friends,

After four years as the Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, I will be moving on from my role as of May 31st, 2024.

This news is bittersweet for many reasons. I had the honour of spearheading this critical work advancing 2SLGBTQIA+ rights alongside my colleagues and with your support. Together we changed the internal organizational culture and structure at CCGSD. With a renewed vision and commitment to supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, our programming became more impact-driven. We have rebuilt relationships and created new ones with like-minded social justice organizations across Canada. Most importantly, together we have advocated for a better world for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to thrive. So much has been accomplished over the last few years and I am forever grateful to have done it with you!

In the coming weeks, you’ll hear more from CCGSD about the next steps for the organization and who will lead its vision and continue its important work.

In the meantime, the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights looks different now. Attacks on the youngest members of our communities have evolved and are finding legitimacy with some decision-makers. Your support of CCGSD as it provides important programming and advocacy is needed more now than ever. I implore you to continue supporting CCGSD as it charts in the next chapter in fulfilling its mission of a world without discrimination.

Thank you for being alongside CCGSD in building a feminist future where every 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and ally can shape the decisions that impact their lives, enjoy freedoms, and navigate an equal world free of violence.

In solidarity,

Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah
Executive Director
Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity
