Asexual Awareness

It is extremely important that we raise awareness of asexual and aromantic people and their experiences since asexuality is often erased or pathologized within the LGBTQ2+ community and greater society. An example of asexual erasure can be found in many explanations of sexuality as a spectrum ranging from straight/heterosexual to bisexual/pansexual to gay/homosexual.

Unfortunately, this understanding of sexuality erases and ignores the existence of asexual and aromantic folks who don’t fall anywhere on the spectrum because they experience little or no attraction to anyone.

Asexual can mean a number of things. It can be used to describe a person who either:

  1. Does not experience sexual attraction
  2. Does not experience a desire for sex, or
  3. Experiences these to a lesser degree than most

Aromantic is used to describe an individual who either:

  1. Does not experience romantic attraction
  2. Does not experience a desire for romantic interaction, or
  3. Experiences these to a lesser degree than most

Support your ace and aro friends by helping to raise awareness and destigmatize asexuality and aromanticism in your community!
