What is it?
This free, bilingual program is for 2SQTBIPOC youth* aged 16-29 across Turtle Island who are interested in learning hands-on about the power of art as a form of activism and 2SLGBTQ+ history and storytelling.
Participants will join us for a full-day online youth forum featuring artist-led workshops, keynote addresses, and activities centering the importance of art as an alternative form of learning and its power as a vehicle for advocacy and sharing history within Two-Spirit, queer, and trans Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (2SQTBIPOC) communities.
Through the workshops and keynote presentations, we will be highlighting the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality and shared stories of resistance. By doing an arts-based forum, we aim to showcase the many ways that art can be a tool not only for self-exploration and discovery, but as a way to intersect with activism, memory, and storytelling in connecting communities throughout time.
* Given the history of the intersection between art and activism and how it has historically been led by marginalized folks, particularly racialized and queer/trans artists, these forums will be a closed space for 2SQTBIPOC (Two Spirit, Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) participants, artists, keynotes, and facilitators, in order to create a safe, affirming, and supportive virtual learning environment for both participants and honorees.
What can I expect?
In a day-long online forum, participants will take part in artist-led workshops and hear keynote addresses. During the forum, youth participants will get the opportunity to participate in two different workshops led by 2SQTBIPOC artists, where they will lead youth in learning, reflection and the creation of their own art work. Participants will be provided boxes with art supplies necessary to participate in the artists’ workshops. The day will also provide various times for youth to discuss what they are learning and thinking about with their peers and facilitators, while also ensuring quiet time for journaling, where youth will be provided with prompts to facilitate further learning.
After the forums, youth participants will have the opportunity to showcase their creative work, either that produced during the forums or independently, in an online exhibition, hosted on a website platform. We will also host a national forum for youth participants to showcase their art, either by discussing their work or to perform live. Youth participants who are interested in showcasing their art will be able to invite their family, friends, and communities to attend.
When are the forums?
Youth are able to register to be a part of Queering ARTivism in your province/territory of residence by filling out our registration form. You are also more than welcome to sign up for another forum*, with recognition of potential scheduling conflicts, etc.
* It is important to keep in mind how forums in a different province/territory than where you currently reside could potentially take place in a different time zone than your own (for example, if you live in Ottawa, ON, but plan to attend Forum 1: BC and Alberta, the forum would start at 9 AM PST, but would be 12 PM EST your time).

C’est quoi au juste?
Il s’agit d’un programme bilingue et gratuit pour les jeunes 2SQTPANDC* de 16 à 29 ans de partout sur l’île de la Tortue qui souhaitent découvrir le pouvoir de l’art comme forme d’activisme, l’histoire 2SLGBTQ+ et l’art du récit.
Les jeunes qui assisteront à ces forums en ligne d’une journée auront la chance de participer à des activités, des présentations et des ateliers donnés par des artistes axés l’importance de l’art comme mode d’apprentissage alternatif et comme moyen fort pour défendre les droits des personnes bispirituelles, queer, trans, noires, autochtones et de couleur (2SQTPANDC) et raconter leur histoire.
Au fil d’ateliers et de présentations, nous mettrons en lumière les intersections entre la race, le genre et la sexualité et raconterons des récits de résistance. En basant le forum sur les arts, nous souhaitons montrer les nombreuses façons par lesquelles l’art peut devenir un outil d’introspection et de découverte, mais aussi un moyen de relier activisme, mémoire et récit en connectant les communautés à travers les époques.
* Étant donné l’histoire de l’intersectionnalité entre l’art et l’activisme et la façon dont elle a historiquement été menée par des personnes marginalisées, en particulier des artistes racisé·e·s et queer/trans, ces forums sont réservés aux participant·e·s, artistes, présentateur·trice·s et animateur·trice·s 2SQTPANDC. L’objectif est de créer un espace d’apprentissage en ligne où les participant·e·s et les invité·e·s pourront s’affirmer et se sentir en sécurité et soutenu·e·s.
À quoi s’attendre?
Lors d’un forum en ligne d’une journée, tu auras l’occasion d’assister à des présentations et de participer à deux ateliers donnés par des artistes 2SQTPANDC qui te guideront dans l’apprentissage, la réflexion et la création de ton propre art. Tu recevras une boîte avec le matériel artistique dont tu auras besoin pour participer aux ateliers donnés par les artistes. Il y aura aussi différents moments pendant la journée pour parler de tes apprentissages et de tes réflexions avec tes pairs et les animateur·trice·s. Des moments de silence seront également prévus pour te permettre d’écrire tes réflexions et on te donnera des pistes pour t’aider à approfondir ton apprentissage.
À la fin des forums, tu pourras présenter les créations que tu as faites pendant le forum ou de manière indépendante lors d’une exposition hébergée sur une plateforme en ligne. Nous tiendrons également une exposition d’art nationale en ligne pendant lequel les jeunes participant·e·s pourront présenter leur art, soit en discutant de leur démarche ou en faisant une performance en direct. Les jeunes qui souhaitent présenter leurs créations pourront inviter leur famille, leurs ami·e·s et des membres de leur communauté.
Quand auront lieu les forums?
Lorsque l’inscription sera ouverte, tu pourras t’inscrire au forum ARTivisme à la queer de ta province ou de ton territoire en remplissant notre formulaire d’inscription. Il est possible de t’inscrire à un forum d’une autre province ou d’un autre territoire*, mais fais attention à l’horaire.
*À noter que si tu t’inscris à un forum ailleurs que dans ta province ou ton territoire de résidence, il se pourrait que l’événement ait lieu dans un autre fuseau horaire. Par exemple, si tu habites à Ottawa, en Ontario, mais que tu prévois participer au Forum 1 : Colombie-Britannique et Alberta, le forum débutera à 9 h, heure du Pacifique, ce qui veut dire à midi chez toi, heure de l’Est.

This year, the Centre is looking for remote volunteers to help with outreach and promotion of our online programming. If you are interested in volunteering, gaining valuable and marketable skills in such areas as event coordination, fundraising, public speaking, database management, networking, and social media.
