URGENT AND IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE CAMPANA FAMILY/WINDSOR PRIDE

The website  has been launched and petitions can be downloaded off this site to request change to the Health Canada policies regarding organ and blood donation  The policies that affect Gay Males ultimately affects the entire population in Canada as we face a severe shortage of both blood and organ donations.  Health Canada policies are based on old science.

The announcement of the petition drive took place last week in LaSalle Ontario just prior to the first annual Run for Rocky which took place in Windsor Ontario on Sunday April 14th.  A graduate of the Richard Ivey Business Program at University of Western Ontario, and an employee of Proctor and Gamble, Rocky was a young gay male who attempted to take his own life in August of 2012.  He was on life support for 2 days in Toronto during this time, his parents requested to donate his organs those organs were denied.

It was after Rocky’s death that Rob and Nancy Campana researched the confusing and dated policies surrounding the donation of Gay Male (MSM) organs in this country and the desperate need for blood and organ donation change. They presented a petition to MP Brian Masse’s office last Thursday who in turn sent in to the Petition Wording Branch of the House and the wording was approved Friday morning with little change.  MP Brian Masse has agreed to table the petition in the House of Commons.

The petition initial introduction and signing took place on Friday April 12th at Rocky Campana’s former high school Sandwich Secondary School as a symbol to young Canadians that they can be part of big change.  It was then signed by the hundreds that took part in the first inaugural Run for Rocky this past weekend on Sunday April 14th – a fundraiser in Rocky’s name and a first in Ontario to help support the newly mandated Gay Straight Alliances in the local Windsor/Essex County School System.  The Run raised not only awareness and community support for the GSA’s but also raised over $65000.00 to support these programs locally.

It is only fitting that this petition will also be spread and promoted across the country of Canada during National Organ and Tissue Donation Week which runs April 21st-April 28th2013 and coincides with Rocky’s birthday on April 22nd.  The Campana Family encourages everyone to become a donor and carry a donor card no matter what their sexual orientation is. You must register your consent to become a donor with Service Ontario (Check the local service provider outside of Ontario)

Carrying a donor card is the best way to be a donor- Drivers Licenses and Health Cards are not always straight forward donor consent documentation.

As a family we will be registering our consent symbolically on Rocky’s Birthday and we encourage you to do the same.

We ask that citizens across Canada interested in helping out with this petition drive download a petition and read all petition rules on thewww.allhealthycanadiansshouldbeabletodonate.com website Signed petitions must be returned signed (Signature only –names cannot be printed) to Windsor Pride by Sept 15 2013.  Windsor Pride is collecting petitions on behalf of the Campana Family.   You are encouraged to share this Press Release thru email or Facebook postings to get the word out rapidly.
