On Monday, October 15, I spent about an hour and a half with a fantastic group of over 20 youth aged 9-11. Accompanied by their troop leaders (and boxes of tasty mint chocolate cookies), these Girl Guides listened to me discuss bullying and anti-bullying strategies using My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and Harry Potter references, followed by asking them to resolve a situation by doing skits in groups. I had such a lovely time getting to know everyone, and though the subject matter and examples they brought to the table were heavy and serious, I feel like we had a lot of progress. Can’t wait for my next talk with the Girl Guides as we explore deeper with issues like homophobia, transphobia, and maybe why the Twilight books are kind of creepy.
Thanks for the cookies!
