Jer’s Vision is pleased to have partnered with The Rainbow Resource Centre in bringing about the 2nd Annual StandOUT! Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and Diversity Provincial Conference! The conference was for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Questioning and Allied* (LGBTTQQA*) youth and it was held on November 19th, 2012 at The Canad Inns Polo Park Destination Centre.
The conference invited approximately 100 teachers / service providers and approximately 250 students from high schools across Manitoba and North Western Ontario to take part in a day of learning, skills building, discussions, fun and networking! Drawing on the themes of Visibility, Action, Support and Pride, StandOUT! was an adult facilitated and peer-led leadership conference aimed at supporting youth in taking an active role in creating school environments free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity.
Workshops presented by Jer’s Vision were “Looking at LGBTQ Action Intersectionally & Inclusively” (Jeremy Dias) and “Gender Diversity and Trans 101”. National Conference Manager and slam poet Faye Estrella, aka Festrell, also did a keynote presentation that incorporated poetry and stories about their tumultuous childhood in Scarborough, and the difficulties and triumphs growing up queer, trans, and Filipino.
“I loved your workshop and presentation,” one participant said. “You’re a huge inspiration to me.”
