On May 17th, 2013, the Brockville Memorial Civic Centre was filled with discussion, resource booths, poetry, music, and the sound of expanding minds as dozens of youth from across the city attended the first Leeds Grenville Dare to Stand Out Brockville Youth Diversity Conference!
Every participant got to take part in workshops on Stigmatism (by Karen Jones), Healthy Living (by Talia Allnut and Dave Patterson), Advocacy (by Dave Patterson), You Are Not Alone (by Sandy Wynia-Katz & Yessinia Vasquez), and Youth Engagement (by Leigh Bursey). Tasty snacks and a lunch were had throughout the day, sponsored generously by the Brockville and Thousand Islands Rotary Club and local realtor Sharon Jordan. The Volunteer Centre of Brockville and other agencies participated in a resource fair from morning till afternoon, and the conference ended with poetry and stories from Jer’s Vision’s Faye Estrella, and music from local rock band Project Mantra (frontlined by Brockville city councillor Leigh Bursey).
“I look forward to doing this again next year. I can already see what we can do to enhance this event in the future,” co-host and co-organizer Leigh Bursey said about the conference. “I am feeling proud.”
