Jack Layton inspires HOPE

Hi, my name is Chanel, and I’ve worked here at Jer’s Vision for the past 6 weeks on projects to raise awareness about homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools.

In honor of the one year anniversary of Jack Layton’s passing, I have been given the task of making Jack Layton HOPE buttons. At the request of his family, they will be available to those who will be present at memorial vigils for Jack in both Ottawa and Toronto. As I’ve been working with these buttons over the past little while, I’ve reminisced over the impact he’s had on not only me, but a lot of other Canadians too. He made the impossible, possible. He made fighting for the underdog cool. Most of all, he urged each and every one of us to stand up for what’s right, look past our differences and work together to create a better and brighter future for Canada.

August 22nd marks the anniversary of Jack Layton’s death. His passionate fight for the rights of the ordinary Canadian citizens has spanned a thirty year public service career. His determination and courage lifted the NDP to soaring heights, leading it to be not only Official Opposition for the first time in its 50 year history, but the largest Official Opposition in Canada in 31 years. As leader of the New Democratic Party, Jack had an undeniable charisma that influenced and inspired not only the Canadian political world, but the rest of Canada and beyond. The legacy of Jack Layton will not soon be forgotten.

Here at Jer’s Vision, we’ve created a “HOPE” button in loving memory of Smiling Jack. The design has been approved by Olivia Chow (Jack’s lifelong partner), and the buttons themselves have been made by youth at Jer’s Vision, and the materials are fair-trade/union made. I am happy to make these buttons available to everyone. All we ask is a small fee for each button ($1) to cover the general costs (production, shipping, etc.).

(If you wish to have a large quantity of buttons, we ask that you pay for the shipping of the buttons.)
