This week, Team Education had the pleasure of speaking to a Diversity Club at Brookfield High School. The Diversity Club requested a workshop about trans issues, and because Zoe and Tarah do not identify as trans, Kole and Jasper volunteered to give the workshop. Thank you so much Kole and Jasper! If you are interested in volunteering in the future, please send us an e-mail! In particular, we would like to prioritize transfeminine folks and trans people of colour.
Some of the topics we covered in today’s workshop were….
- Gender neutral pronouns (such as they/them or ze/hir) and how to use them.
- Coming out stories.
- Two Spirit identity and de/colonization (for more information on this term, book a workshop with us!)
- Transmisogyny.(where transphobia and misogyny intersect: the oppression that specifically affects transfeminine people.)
Our participants were highly enthusiastic, and we received a particularly insightful question about how we can be respectful re: trans people’s birth names (or dead names, according to some folks.) As a rule, it is important not to ask about or bring up trans people’s birth names, and it is especially vital not to out birth names to others! If you have any further questions or comments, please let us know.
Team Education is looking forward to going back to Brookfield High School to engage in more dialogue with the Diversity Club!
Don’t forget, you too can book Team Education workshops for your classroom. Shoot us an email, or give us a phone call. Additionally, education workshops are free so we always welcome donations. To donate, just follow the hyperlink!
