We received so many fantastic applications from students addressing discrimination in their schools or communities and we had a difficult time making a decision. It’s is always nice to hear about the amazing initiatives that youth are taking on in their schools to bring attention to concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring diversity and creating a safe and inclusive environment for others in their communities.
The team at the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity would like to congratulate David Vasconcelos de Paiva on winning the 2017 Jeremy Dias Scholarship.
David de Paiva has been committed to social justice and equity work since he entered High School. His work includes time served as President of his High School’s All Genders and Sexualities Alliance (A.G.S.A), where he fought to ensure that LGBTQ+ rights were protected and respected. During his time with the AGSA, David helped put on an LGBTQ+-centric film festival, and hosted multiple assemblies on relevant and essential topics, including his school’s first ever commemoration of Transgender Day of Remembrance. Outside of High School, David has also worked to advance women’s rights within Canadian politics by joining a project spearheaded by Dr. Elizabeth McGregor, in an attempt to collect and advance the issues brought forward by female Canadian parliamentarians and political activists. David has used this lens to analyze gender-based public policy, in an attempt to bring forward examples of strong, current laws introduced by female politicians in Canada.
