November has been a busy month of collaboration thus far for the team at the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity! Founder and Executive Director Jeremy Dias, along with Program Coordinator Sarah Littisha Jansen were in Toronto this weekend at the 8th annual PREVNet (Promoting Relationships and Ending Violence) conference, entitled Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Bullying: Tools That Work. This collaborative environment was filled with researchers and youth-serving National Organizations that learned about a variety of topics from upcoming mobile Apps that can be used to support those who are bullied and a new Social and Emotional Learning Resource Finder to the research that underpins bullying as a traumatic experience with lasting consequences.
Earlier this month Sarah Littisha Jansen also attended a more local event, the Preventing Suicide in Emerging Adults Conference held by the Ottawa Suicide Prevention Network. Board Member Zac Johnstone was also in attendance as a speaker that shared key insights from focus groups held with Emerging Adults. This conference looked at some of the research surrounding risk factors and protective factors for suicide thoughts, behaviour, and completion, as well as what evaluative evidence there is on different kinds of interventions. The Network will continue to seek community input and partnerships in order to craft a plan for addressing suicide in this transitional age population.
