LAUNCH OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PINK
Colonel By students advocate, with Jer's Vision, Mauril Bélanger (MP), and Tim Tierney, for anti-homophobia to be incorporated into the school curriculum.
Colonel By Secondary School’s S.A.F.E. (Students Advocating For Equality) group is hosting Rainbow Week, April 11th-15th, to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the tragic consequences of bullying and discrimination. S.A.F.E. is the school’s diversity group and gay-straight alliance. The launch event for Rainbow Week is an online petition voicing students’ opposition to Alberta’s Bill C-44, which severely limits the inclusion of sexuality in the curriculum. The aim of this petition is to raise awareness and initiate an ongoing dialogue about this critical pedagogical issue, and send a student-centred message to those in legislative power. Local politicians will be in attendance during our lunch-hour assembly (12:00 – 12:30 p.m.). There will also be a “jam-out” session with musical performances by students, a "poetry slam" showcasing students’ works, informational pamphlets provided to students, and Day of Pink events (on April 13th), which include a clothing and ribbon campaign. This week has been made possible by a SpeakUp grant, provided by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
