Hi, It’s Zac again!
You might remember me from my previous post where I shared my story about coming out at school. As a young person, coming out in school, even a safe one like mine, is scary. Since messaging you, I have started volunteering with the JersVision.org Youth Advisory, and have taken a leadership role in my school’s anti-bullying and Gay-Straight Alliance club, SAFE (Students Advocating for Equality) Recently, my club, SAFE, at Colonel By Secondary School, hosted a Day of Purple event! This is a day about LGBTQ suicide awareness and, on October 22th, loads of students and staff came to school wearing purple to show their support. Their support was inspiring and I think it’s shown everyone at my school just how accepting the student body has come to be. Throughout th week following our event, we fundraised every lunch for Jer’s Vision and raised 180$! On top of fundraising, we held an assembly in the cafeteria at lunch where I spoke to the student body about suicide and bullying among queer youth; it was great to be able to raise awareness, share resources and continue using education to stop bullying. I have recently started volunteering with Jer’s Vision as part of their Youth Advisory Committee. I have loved what I’ve done with the committee so far. Its an incredible feeling knowing that you are helping make a difference in your community! I would recommend it to any youth passionate about our cause! (To get involved, email Zoe: Youth@JersVision.org) This month, our big event is our Ladies Performance Concert on the 23rd of November at Raw Sugar (693 Somerset St W, Ottawa) from 7-10pm and YOU ARE INVITED! This concert has been organized by Youth, for Youth. Doors are open the entire evening. Entrance into the concert is based on a donation, recommended to be $6 or more–though no one will be turned away. All proceeds will be going to Jer’s Vision’s Youth Advisory Committee to help us stop bullying in schools. All youth (ages 14-21) are invited to attend and bring their friends for a night of entertainment and laughter! (For more information, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
) My highlights for the events are the performances by Muna Mohammed, Markelius, and Raven Groves. This event is more than just a concert with amazing female performers, it’s about creating places where all youth can feel accepted and safe. Check out our Facebook page for updates on performers, surprises and to RSVP. Can’t make it? Well, volunteer next time or make a donation here! Thanks so much! Yours truly, Zac Johnstone
